ORGI has signed a MoU with AIIMS in March 2017 to establish a reliable system to measure Causes of Deaths for India.

AIIMS(All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi)

The All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi was established in 1956 as an institution of national importance by an Act of Parliament under Ministry of Health and Family Welfare with the objective of developing and demonstrating a high standard of Medical Education in India. The Institute has comprehensive facilities for teaching, research and patient-care across 42 disciplines. In the field of medical research AIIMS is the lead, having more than 600 research publications by its faculty and researchers in a year. (https://www.aiims.edu/en.html).

ORGI(Office of Registrar General of India)

Office of Registrar General of India, founded in 1961, is the nodal agency of Government of India under  Ministry of Home Affairs for arranging, conducting and analysing the results of the demographic surveys of India including Census of India and Linguistic Survey of India. It is responsible for generating data on population statistics including Vital Statistics and is  entrusted with the responsibility of implementation of Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969 in the country including generation of annual reports for Civil Registration System(CRS), Medical Certification of Causes of Death(MCCD) and Sample Registration System(SRS). Role of AIIMS Technical Support Unit (ATSU)

The overall role of AIIMS Technical Support Unit (ATSU) is to provide any kind of technical assistance to RGI’s Office in conduct of the Verbal Autopsy base Cause of Death Ascertainment under the Sample Registration System. This includes:

  1. Identify and liaise with Institutions and individuals for physician coding of death based on the verbal autopsy carried out by SRS staff.
  2. Manage the web-based software for routing of VA forms to physicians
  3. Prepare/Revise training manuals for different staff involved in the exercise including those for physicians and undertake training of these personnel.
  4. Provide technical inputs on tools and processes used in this exercise from time to time.
  5. Undertake quality control activities for field work as well as in physician coding.
  6. Provide assistance for data analyses and report writing
  7. Review and verify all reports, publications and other dissemination materials
  8. Hold meetings on technical issues as and when required

Role of AIIMS Faculty Members

  • Do quality control of physician coding of deaths
  • Prepare training manuals and undertake training as and when required.
  • Undertake field visits for supervision and quality assurance
  • Each faculty co-ordinates work for 2-3 states.
  • Assist in data management and analysis
  • Review reports
  • Read/Write Papers on specific areas of interest
